«Close Stranger: promoting mutual understanding between population of Gdansk, Kaliningrad and Klaipeda through facilitation of exchange in the field of contemporary arts and culture» is a major project aimed at promoting collaborative work of Lithuanian, Polish and Russian institutions involved in contemporary arts and culture, and facilitating a greater understanding between the population of Gdansk, Kaliningrad and Klaipeda through cultural participation. The project is implemented in the framework of the Lithuania-Poland-Russia Cross-Border Co-operation Programme 2007-2013. The main objective of the Programme financed from the funds of the European Union and the Russian Federation is to strengthen cooperation between Poland, Lithuania and Russia through enhanced bilateral and trilateral relations.

The project launched a wide range of activities targeted at both the local communities and a large trans-border network of professionals such as contemporary artists, photographers, musicians, curators, art and cultural managers etc. A total of 14 exchange exhibitions and 15 public arts projects featured the most interesting contemporary art practices in Gdansk, Kaliningrad and Klaipeda throughout the duration of the project. The exhibitions were accompanied by 11 tailor-made education programs, 7 catalogues and a Sound Around Festival CD release. The final «Сlose Stranger» exhibition presented in 2014 in Klaipeda, Gdansk and Kaliningrad featured contemporary arts works produced by the artists from Lithuania, Russia and Poland during their residencies in the neighboring countries. In 2013 a research art expedition was held in order to develop «Art-guide: Gdansk – Kaliningrad – Klaipeda» and 5 cultural tourist routes. Besides, the data-base closestranger.eu in four languages was produced.

In 2015 «Close Stranger» was short-listed for the Russian National Contemporary Visual Arts Award   “Innovation” in the nomination «Regional Contemporary Art Project».
